Do I need a visa to visit China?

Can I use credit cards in China?

Major hotels, international chains, and large shopping malls usually accept foreign credit cards. However, most restaurants, street vendors, and local shops prefer mobile payments (Alipay / WeChat Pay) or cash. We recommend setting up Alipay before you arrive.

How do I book high-speed train tickets?

The easiest way for foreigners is Trip.com, which has an English interface and accepts international cards. You can also buy tickets at station counters with your passport. Book popular routes 15–30 days in advance.

Is China safe for tourists?

Yes, China is generally very safe for foreign tourists. Violent crime against visitors is rare. The main concerns are petty theft in crowded areas, traffic, and air quality in some cities during winter. Keep digital copies of your passport and visa.

Do people speak English in China?

English is spoken in major hotels, tourist sites, and international restaurants in big cities like Beijing and Shanghai. Elsewhere, it is much less common. Download a translation app and carry screenshots of important addresses in Chinese characters.

What is the best time of year to visit?

Spring (April to May) and Autumn (September to October) are the best seasons for most of China. The weather is mild, skies are clearer, and major gardens and parks are at their most beautiful. Summer is hot and humid; winter is cold but has fewer crowds.

How do I get internet access?

International roaming works but can be slow and expensive. Many travelers buy a Chinese SIM card at the airport or use an eSIM service. Note that many Western websites and apps (Google, WhatsApp, Instagram) are blocked in mainland China without a VPN.

Is tipping expected in China?

No, tipping is not customary in mainland China and may even be refused. The exception is private tour guides and drivers, who often expect tips from foreign visitors.

Can I drink the tap water?

No, tap water in China is not safe to drink. Hotels usually provide a kettle for boiling water, and bottled water is cheap and available everywhere.

What should I avoid doing in China?

Avoid sticking chopsticks upright in rice, giving clocks as gifts, or discussing sensitive political topics. Be patient in queues, and always carry your passport for train tickets and hotel check-ins.
