The Visa-Free Decree

China has thrown open its gates. In recent years, the Middle Kingdom has greatly expanded its visa-free policies, making it easier than ever for travelers from across the world to walk its ancient streets and modern avenues.

The 240-Hour Privilege

The 240-hour (ten-day) visa-free transit policy allows eligible travelers to sojourn in China without a visa, provided they are continuing onward to a third country.

Eligible Nations: Fifty-four countries now enjoy this privilege, including:

  • The United States, Canada, and Mexico
  • All Schengen Area nations
  • The United Kingdom and Ireland
  • Australia and New Zealand
  • Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand
  • Russia, Brazil, and Argentina

What You Must Possess:

  • A confirmed onward ticket to a country other than the one you departed from
  • Entry through one of sixty designated ports of call
  • Intent to remain within the permitted provinces (twenty-four in total)
  • A maximum stay not exceeding 240 hours

The Thirty-Day Sojourn

Citizens from forty-seven nations may enter China visa-free for up to thirty days. This is not transit; this is a true invitation to explore.

European Realms:

France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Portugal, Austria, Belgium, Switzerland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, and more.

Asia-Pacific:

Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand.

The Americas:

Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Mexico.

Required Documents

  • 1A Valid Passport — It must remain valid for at least six months beyond your date of entry.
  • 2Proof of Departure — A return or onward ticket demonstrating your intent to leave.
  • 3Lodging Details — Hotel reservations are recommended, though not always demanded.
  • 4Travel Insurance — Strongly advised for any journey to distant lands.
